Upgrade plan to improve ‘black spot’ intersection ANDREW KING

An intersection with the worst crash rate in the north-west of the city has been revealed. The junction of Roosevelt Ave and Malvern St in St Albans has been branded the area’s top “black spot” for crashes. There are now plans to spend $55,000 to make the intersection safer. The Nor’West News captured on Thursday night a car (right) travelling through the intersection without slowing down and checking the way was clear. A city council report showed that 90 per cent of the crashes are caused by north-bound traffic. Over a five-year period there have been eight crashes at the intersection – two serious, three minor and three non-injury. City council traffic engineer Penny Gray said it was the highest crash rate at any residential intersection in the ward. “It seemed that people were unaware they had to stop at this intersection, so we have tried to make it more visible for the motorist,” she said.

INSIDE:

The Shirley-Papanui Community Board approved changes to the intersection at its meeting on Wednesday. Traffic islands with more prominent give way signs will be installed and a tree on Roosevelt Ave will be removed in an effort to prevent more crashes. The upgrade could have been done sooner, but the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team was working in the area on wastewater pipes. If the changes were installed they would be ripped out by the roadworks. City councillor Pauline Cotter asked city council staff if more costeffective solutions had been looked at, such as putting four stop signs at the junction. “It is quite a bit of money to be spending,” she said. Ms Gray said that other options had been looked at but the most effective way she could see to solve the problem was to install the “splitter islands” and add more signage. “The four stop signs it just seems to confuse drivers.” Completion of the work should be before the end of the 2015/16 financial year.

Staff under fire over rail report ANDREW KING

City council staff are under fire for their report on the northern rail options. The report was asked for by Shirley-Papanui Community Board to explore rail for the Waimakariri District through the northern suburbs and into the city centre. Last year Environment Canterbury spent $20,000 on a report looking into a $10m rail project into the city but it was rejected as too costly. City councillor Ali Jones was frustrated at the lack of information about a “park and ride” system she believes would help motorists from the northern suburbs and Waimakariri District. “I don’t know if it was a misunderstanding but it [park and ride] seemed to only involve buses,” she said. Cr Jones said that it was time to really take the rail idea seriously. “If you don’t put a stake in the ground and say this is what we are going to do and this is why we are going to try then nothing will happen,” she said. A park and ride system is

CAR FIRE St Albans firefighters were called to a car fire in Hoani St, Papanui, last Monday at about 11pm. Fire communications shift manager Brent Dunn said the car was on the street and was well ablaze when firefighters arrived. He said it was not being treated as suspicious.

NEW OPTION NEEDED: Rail is needed to relieve the traffic congestion problems says the Shirley-Papanui Community Board.

parking at a station designed to encourage motorists to park out of the city and use public transport to get in. Board chairman Mike Davidson made a notice of motion asking for city council staff and the New Zealand Transport Agency to look at rail options from the Waimakariri District through northern suburbs, including a park and ride system back in July. At the meeting he voiced his concerns about how traffic would not be able to move “smoothly” into city if there

were just more roads added saying “other options need to be looked at”. City council staff presenting the report said having one train would not be a “game changer” and the single track from the north into town would be the biggest hindrance to the project as well as it not linking up with the city centre. Staff added at the meeting any rail stations would have car parking available as it was standard practice to include it in any plan.

SITE HUNTING FOR POSTSHOP

Cr Jones said just assuming there would be parks is not what they asked to be investigated. “We know that it is hard when there are multiple agencies involved but we need to seriously look at this as a long term option,” she said. When it came to the cost of implementing a rail system from the north into the city it was pretty relative to other projects around. “I don’t accept that cost is an issue when you look at some other projects.” The board has requested that city council staff prioritises investigations into rail options connecting greater Christchurch to the city using existing lines and stations in the first instance and provide that information back to it in 2016. • Road v railway column, p4

The Fendalton Postshop is still looking for a suitable place to relocate to. A New Zealand Post spokewoman said it was still in discussions with possible hosts for its post and Kiwibank services. Its current lease at 19 Memorial Ave, runs out on November 27.

CYCLEWAY CONSULTATION Consultation on the Papanui-Parallel cycleway is open. Submissions on the plan can be made at the city council’s have your say page. The proposed cycleway will run between Sawyers Arms Rd and Bealey Ave, with plans to link to Northlands mall, through St Albans and the Edgeware Village. Consultation ends on December 2 at 5pm. MORE BRIDGE DAMAGE Further damage has been found on the Helmores Lane Bridge forcing a halt to repairs. A spokesman for Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team said it often does not know the full extent of the work until it starts excavating and uncovers the structure. Due to the bridge’s historic significance SCIRT is awaiting clarification of a new methodology for repair with the city council and New Zealand Transport Agency before repairs are continued. The bridge will remain closed in the meantime.

Veterinary practice

Split Pad Disease In 25 years of being a veterinarian, I had never come across Split Pad Disease before. A wicked cruel disease that I came to learn more about, thanks to my gorgeous Lola. If it wasn’t bad enough that she ended up with kidney cancer, she also has a non curable immune mediated pad disease affecting at different times all her feet. As a young pup she often presented intermittently lame. On inspection of her pads I would find craterous, erosive lesions affecting large chunks of her pads, often infected. They’d start as a split that opens up and swells and Lola just wanted to lick it as it was sore. I needed to place an elizabethan collar on her to stop her doing this. Lola would be severely lame, in pain and miserable. If more than one foot was affected she couldn’t weight bear at all. She learnt to walk using only 2 legs!! I agonised for her as I couldn’t help her. Pain relief never really seemed to help and it was just a matter of time for her pad epithelium to regrow. I struggled on for months hoping this disease would just disappear. I would cleanse her pads, dress them to keep them protected and clean and often place special leather boots on her when we went walking. I tried all sorts of antibiotics, anti inflammatories, probiotics, booties, creams, prescription diets and emolients and nothing hastened the repair process. I decided to biopsy her pads under a general anaesthetic to get a definite diagnosis. Unfortunately it confirmed Split pad disease.

Split pad disease is a highly characteristic syndrome of unknown etiology that is very rare in the dog.

the paw pads. Adjacent haired skin is not affected and the lesions are greatly aggravated by self trauma. Pain or itchiness may result in self trauma due to the dog chewing at the affected feet. Dogs can have variable lameness during episodes of splitting and peeling and some animals may have repeated episodes. Affected animals are otherwise healthy. Initially only one pawpad may be affected, followed by development of additional similar lesions in other pads. Usually all pawpads are eventually involved. Spending considerable time on concrete doesn’t help and unfortunately our entire section has a lot of conctrete and tarseal! The heat from the concrete on the pads is a contributing factor. Keeping Lola off this is impossible. Interestingly since starting her chemotherapy 3 months ago, her pads have been great. Although I do attribute some of that to the special prescription diet Lola eats packed with the Omegas, glucosamine and a hydrolysed protein. We have swapped one evil for another but hopefully my girl has beaten cancer. I will keep you updated on her progress. Recently she was radiographed and a needle was found in her abdomen!! Probably ingested from the garbage. So the next chapter in Lolas health diary will be an abdominal ultrasound to see WHERE the needle is and IF it needs to be surgically removed. She’s lucky to be owned and loved by not 1 but 2 vets!! Dr Michele McMaster

Clinical and histologic features are suggestive of an anatomic defect in cornification of the pawpads, suggesting hereditary disease. The lesions often are characterized by splitting and peeling of the pawpad keratin layer as a major histologic and clinical feature. This condition has been reported predominantly in young adult dogs and the initial clinical feature is splitting of

Mike Davidson - ShirleyPapanui Community Board chairman.

To reduce the increased traffic coming into Christchurch from the north, major roading projects are planned to be built by the New Zealand Transport Agency and the city council. Although I understand the need for this relief, it is shameful that there is a continual focus of road and encouraging vehicles to resolve traffic congestion. The negative impacts of this project both environmentally and socially to St Albans are real and should not be ignored. The city council appears to be listening and time will tell if they truly have. The question still remains, would more roads resolve the problem? It is important that if Christchurch wants to create a sustainable and resilient transport network that we have a hierarchy where active transport (walking and cycling) is at the top followed by public transport with the passenger vehicle last. We need to have a vision of what Christchurch’s transport network will look like in 50 years’ time and start moving towards that vision now. Increasing residency in our northern suburbs and north of Christchurch will

mean any reduction in traffic congestion from the northern arterial will be short-lived and once again we will be looking at another option. Whether it is light or heavy, rail is the answer and now is the time for all the strategic partners to work towards this as the solution for our city’s traffic problems and the whole of greater Christchurch. We could look at quick gains by utilising the existing rail lines while still working on the long-term goal of a complete rail network going right into the heart of the city. This is more achievable by using a light rail system and it is a shame there was no foresight when the bus exchange was built as amalgamating the two will create a resilient public transport network. For rail to become a reality one of the strategic partners discussing our future transport requirements need to be champions for this project. Now is time for the city council to step up and lead this.

Community centre project gets boost

COSTS APPROVED Ashley Kate Stuart, of Casebrook, will head to the United States for the Harvard National Model United Nations Conference representing New Zealand. It is being held at Harvard University, Boston, from January 28 to February 26. The Shirley-Papanui Community Board has approved $500 from its youth development fund towards her costs.

ANDREW KING

Spending power for the $3.2 million St Albans Community Centre has been handed over from the city council to a special working group. The Shirley-Papanui Community Board decided last week that the St Albans Working Party should have control over how the money for the replacement facility on Colombo St should be spent. Members include local school and resident groups representatives. Community board chairman Mike Davidson, city councillor Pauline Cotter and board member Jo Byrne will also join the group. It has been four years since the St Albans Resource Centre was demolished and a transitional facility run by the St Albans Residents Association put in its place. Working party chairman Phil Driver said they will hold a meeting in mid-December to meet with all the relevant stakeholders and start to get the project under way.

“Everybody I have met so far has been committed to make this work and I hope that continues,” he said. “I get fired up helping out communities.” But city councillor Ali Jones said she was frustrated the community centre had been delayed.

Confirming the site and looking at whether there was a need for the facility were being revisited – things Cr Jones thought had already been decided. “I don’t want this delayed any longer the community has dealt with enough and they deserve a community facility,” she said.

BUS STOP MARKINGS New bus stop markings for Kensington Ave have been approved by the Shirley-Papanui Community Board. To date there have only been signs to indicate that it is a bus stop and the markings will prevent vehicles from parking there. Board

member Jo Byrne was against the proposal saying that the bus stop should be moved because of safety concerns. She was worried children using a nearby walkway could have their vision impaired with a bus stop in that location. NEW SITE FOR ORGANISATION Te Ora Hou Aotearoa have brought a new site on Windermere St, Papanui. The $1.3m property will house a new community facility that it hopes will be unique in the north-west area, once more funding is secured. The group is currently finalising an architect for the project. Te Ora Hou Aotearoa is a network of faith-based Māori youth and community development organisations. It has centres around the country and does what it can to support young people and their families in partnership with whānau, neighbourhoods and other organisations. TREES TO BE FELLED The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has approved the removal of 21 trees between Kahu Rd and Straven Rd on the Boys’ High Link cycleway. They will be replaced with eight trees that will allow better light and be less obtrusive to those using the shared cycleway and walkway.

ROAD SAFETY ISSUE The Shirley-Papanui Community Board have asked city council staff to look at a safety issue on Blighs Rd in Papanui. The concern is a piece of kerb that juts out into the left turn lane forcing vehicles to cross the centre line on their way to the traffic lights. City council staff told the community board at last week’s meeting it was already looking at the road to investigate how to make it run more efficiently. But city councillor Ali Jones says it’s a safety issue and council staff needed to address it urgently.

STEP FORWARD: The St Albans Working Party will meet in mid December to discuss how to move the project forward.

Connie Christensen

Keen on boosting cycling Redwood resident Connie Christensen has created a Facebook page to encourage a network of cyclists in Christchurch. She speaks with Andrew King about things that scare her when cycling in the city, plans to boost cycling numbers and if she would ever ride a tandem with her partner How did you get into cycling? I am from Denmark so I have cycled all my life. It was quite a natural thing for me to keep doing once I moved over to New

Zealand. I thought it was pretty easy to cycle around the city. I cycle mainly for transport and exercise. What was the clincher for you, what drew you in?

DIFFERENT MENTALITY: Connie Christensen believes that Christchurch needs to get out of the ‘us and them’ mentality when it comes to cyclists and motorists. PHOTO: ANDREW KING

It has always been the convenience factor, moving easily through traffic, plus I get exercise. It is so much easier to get around when you are on a bicycle and you get to see a lot more of the city. You can stop and watch things easily and parking is never a problem. Who did you start cycling with? In Denmark, majority of kids cycle to school. So we would cycle together most mornings. In New Zealand you don’t see so much of it but hopefully that will pick up. Kids need to cycle and walk to school, it teaches them some vital life skills around road safety. So you grew up in Denmark? Yeah, in a place called Kolding. It is 80km north of the German border. We call it mainland Denmark. What was that like? For me it was just growing up, I had a pretty normal

upbringing. I don’t come from an adventurous family but somehow I ended up with the ‘travel bug’. How did you catch the ‘travel bug’? I don’t know, at school I was quite taken by foreign culture, mainly Indian and Egyptian cultures. I travelled to India when I was 23, everyone thought I was mad. A year later I met my New Zealand boyfriend backpacking around Sweden. That was 25 years ago and the rest is history. How long have you lived in Christchurch? I have lived here for around nine years now. Is Christchurch a safe place to cycle around? I think it is relatively safe. You are on a bicycle so you are more at risk than if you were in a car. The biggest thing we [Christchurch] have to get over this ‘us and them’ mentality. We are all on the road, we don’t like the bumps and the roadworks but we all have to get to from

A to B so we all need to take a deep breath and just get on with it. Most people are quite understanding, but then there are a few that must just be having a really bad day. Have you had any scary moments? I have but nothing really bad in Christchurch. The worst is when people don’t realise that the shoulder of the road is not the cycle lane. People don’t realise how scary it is when they fly by at 60km/h. I notice when I go back to Denmark that there is a bit more courtesy but there is more responsibility on the drivers. How some people turn corners scare me a bit as well. Does it put you off cycling in the city? I am in the category of the fearless because I would get up and get on my bicycle again. I haven’t had a big accident here yet thankfully. Tell us about Go Cycle Christchurch? It is something that I set up to be as simple as possible. We try to engage with people who cycle already, help others find routes to get around and also use the new cycleways.

numbers in city

KEEN: Connie says cycling around the city gives her more time to see the rebuild and other new businesses that are popping up.

It is a simple Facebook page that people can post on to find help or ask questions. At the moment it is just for adults and everyone involved is a volunteer. You can also send an email in and I will try match them up with others in their area. It is not about getting people to ditch their cars, it is to get the most out of yourself and the public transport systems.

Has it been popular? It has started to get off the ground. I have put out lots of leaflets around libraries. The challenge now is to engage those who already cycle and link them with who are thinking about it. This summer is the summer to start cycling. What is the best thing the city could do for cyclists? I’ve already engaged a bit

with the city council. Go Cycle Christchurch is for those who are confident to cycle helping those who are not so confident. I have been talking about other ways to encourage people to cycle. Some of the bigger companies could do their own version of Go Cycle Christchurch. They have large staff numbers and I think it would be a shrewd move rather than just providing car parks. It is not the only solution but it is a good step in the right direction. The city council has just published a new cycle guide and I encourage people to pick one up and have a look. Do you and your partner have a tandem? We don’t have a tandem! I have come across couples who have them. Are you going to get one? I think I am too much of an independent person, we would have to work out who is going to be at the back. • If you want to get involved in Go Cycle Christchurch or know someone that would be interested visit its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ Go-Cycle-Christchurch

Action-packed day at Bishopdale Primary Bishopdale Primary School pupils leapt and sprinted last week as part of their athletics day. The children competed in year groups, participating in relays, high jump, long jump, long distance, discus and shotput. Events started at 9.30am and finished with sprints final in the afternoon. A school spokeswoman said there was a good turnout of parents that came along to support the children and had a fun day.

HAVING FUN: James Comyns, Tavia Ralston, Emma Coe and Tyler Nixon enjoyed their day at the Air Force Museum.

HAVING FUN: Peyton Carroll takes off on the long jump.

Spread your wings Cotswold School pupils took their learning to a new heights with a trip to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand. Room 17 and 18 pupils have been learning about flight this term including how different aircraft fly. So last week they headed to the museum in Wigram to see aeroplanes and helicopters up close, from both world wars up until present day. Eight year old Emma Coe was very excited to find her fam-

ily name on the ‘Roll of Honour’ board at the museum showing that a possible relation of hers served in the air force. In the education room, pupils learnt about the parts of an aircraft, how the control surfaces of an aircraft work, the four forces of flight and how an aerofoil works. Jayden Okeroa was able to identify most of the parts of an aeroplane. “The most important [part] is the wings and the next most important part is the body,” he said.

THEY’RE OFF: Asma Rizwan Bistami, Autumn Aranui-Tuitupou Kutu, Maia Gaitt and Sativa Turi take off in one of the many sprint events during the afternoon.

HIGH JUMP: Levi Vincent concentrates hard in the high jump

QUICK: Kaydenc Shadbolt (right) wins a sprint event with Levi Vincent (left) close behind.

Thinking outside the box has paid off for Selwyn House School pupils with a first and second place in a national competition. The school had two teams entered in the junior division of the Future Problem Solvers national finals in Auckland. Pupils worked in two teams of four with coaches and teachers Bridget ComptonMoen and Greg Pearce, who facilitated their research into the current topic and helped them to learn and apply the six-step problem solving process. Mr Pearce said it was a great result. “We have done well in the past but this it a great achievement,” he said.

From February to September this year the girls studied the three set topics and worked through the problem solving process. The pupils’ work was then sent to a national team of evaluators who assessed each project and returned it with comprehensive feedback. Selwyn House’s top-placed teams will represent the school and New Zealand at the international finals in the United States in June 2016 subject to funding. “That could be a bit of a challenge but we have a while,” Mr Pearce said. Future Problem Solving is an international educational programme which requires a high level of abstract reasoning

Junior division • First – Selwyn House: Aria Carroll, Zelle Logan, Enya O’Malley and Violette Perry • Second – Selwyn House: Harriet Compton-Moen, Lucy Jessep, Kathleen King and Ella Stephens and develops creative, critical thinking skills in students from year 1-13. Students grapple with global and community issues, identify underlying problems and create positive solutions to those issues. It aims to give young people the skills to design and promote positive futures as citizens of the 21st century.

$5k boost for dancer Former Merivale resident Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson has received a financial boost in his quest to be the first New Zealand dancer to graduate from a prestigious American school. He received the AdviceFirst Canterbury Regional Scholarship of $5000 to help him achieve his dream of completing his studies at The Juilliard School, New York. “My mum has been supporting me on her own since I was eight, so the funds will help further support my study,” he said. “I have two years to go and the fees are increasing.” Mr Guillemot-Rodgerson said the school is the world’s most selective performing arts institution and years of training paid off for the 19-year-old who decided to audition for entry two years ago. “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I was selected to be one of the 12 boys chosen from around the world to be part of the class of 2017,” he said. A degree from The Juilliard School would enable him to work with the world’s foremost dancers and choreographers. AdviceFirst chief executive Mark Ennis said being the only New Zealander to have been selected to go to the school is an accolade in itself.

FINANCIAL BOOST: Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson has won the AdviceFirst Canterbury Regional Scholarship worth $5000.

“We feel very proud to be able to support Joshua further his studies so that he can return to New Zealand and continue to educate and inspire the community about the arts,” he said. “We’re delighted to be able to support the talented people that

live in our community. There’s no doubt, there’s some incredible stories out there and we’re always impressed by Kiwis who are doing their thing.” Mr Guillemot-Rodgerson said his next steps are to continue gathering enough funds to com-

plete his degree then create a large choreographic project that could be filmed and shared to promote New Zealand’s presence in the world concert dance scene. AdviceFirst Canterbury is the local office of a firm of financial advisers who believe New Zealanders deserve quality financial advice to help them stay on track through life.

Most valuable players named

Three hockey players from the north-west of the city have been recognised for their performances this season at the Canterbury Hockey awards. Merivale resident and Avon United striker Ari Barrow took home the most valuable player award for his performances this year in the Canterbury men’s under-21 side. Burnside resident and Harewood club player Aidan Christie claimed the Canterbury men’s under-18 association most valuable player. Atamira De Goldi, of Bishopdale, took home coach of the year after she guided the Canterbury girls under-18 association representative team to a national title.

15

STRONG SEASON: Merivale resident Ari Barrow was named Canterbury men’s under-21 most valuable player at the recent Canterbury Hockey end of year awards dinner.

Meanwhile, in other major awards at the presentation, Black Stick Nick Haig received the supreme men’s player of the year award for his performances for both the national side as well as finishing the national hockey league as the top goal scorer. Women’s Black Stick Pippa Hayward took home the supreme women’s player of the year award. The awards celebrated a strong year for Canterbury Hockey representative teams who ended the season with five

national titles including a clean sweep at the senior national championships with both the senior women and men taking home titles. The men’s side successfully defended their 2014 title while the women’s side broke a six year drought to win their competition. It was the first time that Canterbury took home both national titles. The awards night was held on September 30 at Riccarton Racecourse.

Guy Fawkes night will have come and gone by the time you read this. But whatever occurred on November 5, there will be a lot of people who still have quite a store of fireworks. We tend to see between now and into the New Year the regular lighting of fireworks saved from the brief period of legal sale. While the setting off of these fireworks is not illegal in itself you can still be charged in court, with arson, believe it or not, if your reckless act causes a fire. I saw this a few years ago with two decent young blokes charged when crackers thrown on to a roof by them set a neighbour’s house on fire. Any use of fireworks comes with the responsibility of ensuring they are set off safely. Fire is not the only thing we respond to that can wreck a house. Last Saturday contractors

installing insulation in a house ceiling in Halswell accidentally broke the water feed pipe which sent a steady stream of water cascading into the rooms below. Our salvage tender with pumps, squeegees and carpet suckers helped clean up the mess. Arson fires in empty homes haven’t stopped. It just seems the places are a bit more widespread than they used to be. A house high on the hill in Lyttelton was the latest in the early hours of last Saturday. If like me you’re sick of it, and you know something, for goodness sake report it. You might prevent a tragedy.

Professional

therapy treatments offered by

dedicated team

The team at Transform Appearance Clinic in Riccarton is dedicated to providing professional and highly effective appearance medicine and beauty therapy treatments to their clients.

W

ith their skills and experience, the clinic’s doctor, Ian Little, the registered nurses and qualified beauty therapists offer a wide variety of treatments for men

and women of all ages. Appearance medicine treatments include Botox™ fillers, laser skin tightening and resurfacing, laser tattoo and hair removal, microdermabrasion, vitamin C infusion

and dermal needling for skin rejuvenation. Botox™ treatment is not only used for wrinkle removal, it is also highly effective for treating excessive underarm sweating. The application of dermal fillers for facial contouring softens the face so wrinkles and lines are much less obvious. Clients approaching the clinic for treatments like these often feel vulnerable, so the staff put them at ease and ensure they get all the information they need through an in-depth consultation. “We spend a lot of time working out what’s best for the client, look at the options and also discuss the costs,” the clinic’s Jenny Little explains. “People are encouraged to take information away and think about what

they want before committing to treatment,” Jenny says, “but there are also clients who want to have a Botox™ treatment straight away and then go back to work.” She says appearance medicine treatments have improved considerably over the 20 years the clinic has been operating, and there are products and methods to suit all types of skin. The clinic also offers mole mapping, mole removal and primary skin cancer removal, while another key area of treatment is varicose vein removal. Two methods are offered – endovenous laser treatment and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. The clinic has relationships with several health insurance providers and clients may be covered for varicose vein treatment, providing it is included in their policy. Transform Appearance Clinic is discreetly located at 52a Mandeville Street. It is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am, with late nights on Tuesday and Thursday, and Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Phone 343 2880 to enquire about treatments or make an appointment.

Be Sun Smart This Summer S ummer is just around the corner, and as the days get longer and warmer we all spend more time out in the sun. Now is the time to check our sunscreen supply, whether there is plenty and the expiry date.

WHY IS SUNBURN SO BAD? Sunburn can lead to melanoma and other skin cancers later in life and should be avoided. Research continues into how skin cancers are formed, and what type of UV exposure has the worst effects. Sunburn is painful and potentially deadly, so cover up to avoid getting sunburnt. Find out more about skin cancer. HOW CAN I BE SUNSMART Being SunSmart is about protecting skin and eyes from damaging UV radiation. From September to April when outdoors: Slip into a long-sleeved shirt and into the shade. Generally, fabrics with a tighter weave and darker colours will give you greater protection from the sun. Some clothing is sold with a UV radiation Protection Factor (UPF) rating. Clothing with a UPF of 50+ offers superior protection and could be an ideal choice for outdoor workers.

Slop on plenty of broad-spectrum (filters both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours. Reapply more frequently if sweating or swimming. Slap on a hat with a wide-brim or a cap with flaps. This will help reduce the risk of sunburn to your face, ears and neck. These are the most common places where we get sunburnt. Wrap on a pair of close-fitting sunglasses. When buying sunglasses, look for the words ‘good UV protection’ on the label or swing tag. Remember to always protect skin and eyes when you’re in the mountains, or around reflective surfaes like snow and water, when UV levels are damaging. SUNSMART MYTHS 1) I can’t get sunburnt on a cloudy day. False: You can still get sunburnt on a cloudy day. This is because UV radiation can get through light cloud cover, so unprotected skin can still be damaged. 2) Temperature gives me a good idea of the the chances of getting sunburnt. False: The heat from the sun is caused by

infrared radiation, not ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can still be high even on a cool day, when infrared radiation is low. Just think about how easy it is to get sunburnt on the skifields when it can be very cold. 3) I’m windburnt not sunburnt. False: Your windburn is sunburn caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The wind may make you feel cooler but UV radiation can still be high even on a windy day. Just think about why you don’t get windburn if you’re out in the dark on a windy night.

23

6) Wearing a t-shirt in the water is as sun protective as a rash shirt. False: A wet t-shirt may offer only half the protection it does when it is dry. If you are going to be in the water, a rash shirt and sunscreen is a good form of protection. A full body wetsuit gives better protection.

4) Sunscreen blocks out all UV radiation. False: No sunscreen filters out all UV radiation – that’s why you need to limit your time in the sun no matter what sunscreen you’re using and cover up. 5) Getting badly sunburnt before the age of 20 increases my risk of getting melanoma skin cancer later on. True: If you have a history of one or more sunburns before you turn 20, research suggests you have a much higher chance of getting melanoma skin cancer as you age.

Help when parents separate

Parenting can be difficult when you’re together, let alone when you are separated.

P

arents or guardians may disagree on things such as day-to-day care, contact arrangements, choosing a school or child care, or what happens with the family home. This can be distressing for everyone, particularly children/tamariki. But there’s a lot you can do to make things easier, for both you and your children. Parenting Through Separation is a free programme now being offered by Family Works in various locations in North Canterbury, Selwyn and Christchurch, depending on demand. By taking part, you’ll get practical advice about separation and planning for your child. You’ll learn about talking to your

ex-partner about arrangements with the children, childfocused planning, and resolving issues. The programme can also help grandparents and other wider family/ whānau members work out a dispute about how children will be cared for. To find out more, phone (03) 366 5472, email campbellc@psusi.org.nz, or visit the website https://uppersouthisland. familyworks.org.nz/services/parentingthrough-separation.

Youth Guarantee Trades

C

PIT Trades Youth Guarantee students are learning practical skills that not only lead to careers but are benefitting our community. Under the free New Zealand governmentled Youth Guarantee scheme, CPIT offers young people aged 16 to 19 years who have left school the opportunity to study and learn practical skills in areas such as the creative industries, computing, business, health, hospitality as well as trades. The skills acquired on these courses help students gain pathway into further study. In the six-month Introduction to Construction Allied Trades at CPIT, several student building projects are being donated to worthy causes such as Ronald McDonald House, the charitable trust that helps the families of sick children. CPIT joinery tutor Nigel Jamieson said these projects were real world learning opportunities that also gave back to the community. “When it’s finished they say, ‘wow’, and I hear a lot of them say, ‘actually I think I could build my own sleep out or playhouse’. And I tell them that’s great, now they can see how it’s done. They come away with a real sense of empowerment and achievement, which makes me proud to be a tutor,” Jamieson said. Youth Guarantee student D’Braye Kemp, 18, is hoping to carry on his studies in the exacting trade of joinery at CPIT next year. “It’s important to me to learn it right and get it right,” he said. Another example of high-spec Youth

Getting it right: Pictured working on a playhouse project destined for Ronald McDonald House are CPIT joinery tutor Nigel Jamieson with CPIT Youth Guarantee carpentry and joinery students, from left, Justuss Binnie, 16, D’Braye Kemp, 18, Liam Quinn, 16, obscured Aaron Skipper and Khylas Broughton, both 16.

Guarantee work is the sleep out recently donated to a social development trust at New Brighton. It was one of five made at CPIT Trades this year, with the added challenge of a curved roof line. Positive Directions Trust general manager Phil Tikao said the sleep out would make a difference to those accessing the trust’s social development services for the first time. “We haven’t really had a space for one-on-one interviewing, so we will use the sleep out as a nice, friendly space for talking to people and counselling. To have been gifted something like this just means so much to us.”

That’s the reality of Aoraki Polytechnic’s media communication programme based at the CPIT campus in Christchurch. But that doesn’t mean the students don’t do any work. The polytechnic has embraced the rapidly-changing media environment for the entry level programme as students learn to write news stories and features, create radio news and programmes, shoot and edit video stories as well as getting in front of the camera. Tutor Dale McCord says the way the course operates is just the way it should be. While the course focusses on core skills, it educates the students about the many changing skills someone working in the media or communications business needs to have. “It’s not enough just to love writing these days. Students need a whole raft of skills so they can fit into a media environment where they are expected to be multi-skilled.” Print journalists now need to be able to step in front of a camera and provide a news video while a television journalist might have to write a story for the web and provide photos. McCord says the best thing about today’s students is that they are so adaptable and keen to try anything. They come equipped with social media skills and are able to connect quickly with people online. “I do have to do a bit of work to encourage

them to get out and actually talk to people face to face but they quickly grow in confidence doing that.” Students might feel they are going back to primary school for one part of the course – spelling and grammar which, McCord says, is a key skill for a journalist, now more than ever. “These days copy can be put online with very little input from anyone else so people have to be very strong in these core skills.” The students produce news bulletins on Compass FM and their own programme called Plugged in with Aoraki on Plains FM while the course also covers media law and ethics, photography and presenting. There are limited places available on this programme for 2016. For more information on Aoraki Polytechnic’s Media Communication programmes visit www. aoraki.ac.nz or call 0800 426 725.

earning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. Imagine the feeling of inadequacy when someone asks ‘does anyone know first aid’ only to find that you were not taught these skills on your course. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children

3 25

are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. In times of emergency, such as the Canterbury earthquakes, many people were called upon to do first aid in a situation well beyond their comfort zone. This is the community resilience that we as good citizens should be trained for. Lives were undoubtedly saved as ordinary people pushed themselves into a role that they never expected. It is not difficult, and courses are not complicated. But one day, you will be called upon to help someone in need. Will you know what to do? If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located. Legacy the car for foul weather SPECIFICATIONS

MY 2015 evaluations have almost been as much about the weather as they have about the cars. After a glorious summer, Christchurch was pounded by a wickedly cold winter, and it seems that whenever I’m planning to get out on the road there is bad weather around. And by that I’m referring to snow, ice, rain or wind. The day I was driving Subaru’s new Legacy, conditions where at their worst, I woke up to snow on the car, and the plains were blanketed from Darfield through to Methven. On several occasions snow flurries slowed my progress. As it turned out, they were probably the most suitable conditions in which to evaluate a four-wheel-drive vehicle and Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheeldrive system is one of the best on the market. All Subarus sold new in New Zealand are four-wheel-drive, and because of that the brand has earned a great reputation here in the South Island. Skiers and other recreational enthusi-

asts love Subaru, even if you aren’t into winter sport there are safety and other benefits gleaned from buying all-wheel-drive. And Subaru has made it simpler to choose from their lineup. Quite simply, if you want a station wagon you have to buy Outback, if you want a sedan you have to buy Legacy. Of course, there are other cross-sections of models, Impreza sedan and hatchback, and the sports utility vehicles Forester and XV. At present the Legacy is available in just two specifications depending on engine options. There’s a 2.5-litre four-cylinder version and a 3.6-litre sixcylinder unit, both petrol powered. I evaluated the big six

several weeks back, this evaluation focuses on the entry-level model. Subaru rates the Legacy four with a 7.3litre per 100km (39mpg) combined cycle average, which fits well with the 8.6l/100km (33mpg) figure showing when I took the test car back to the dealership. On the subject of figures, the Legacy has 129kW and 235Nm power outputs both realised a little close together at 5800rpm and 4000rpm but such is the torquey nature of horizontally-opposed engines there is no shortage of power. Drive is sent through a paddleshift, six-step continuously variable transmission, the benefit of

CVT is little restriction of drive, the engine works unimpeded against the seamless flow of gearing. Well, that’s no surprise if you consider the engine is much the same as that which powers the Impreza WRX, sans turbocharger. Part of its sporty appeal can be attributed to the sport/intelligent drive mode program which can be selected to suit whatever driving style you feel like during each journey. Against the clock the Legacy four will launch to 100km/h from a standstill in 8.8sec and will make a highway overtake in 5sec (80km/h to 120km/h). All that aside, the Legacy’s greatest strength is that of its ability underneath. The driveline and suspension combine to provide controlled handling manners, more so when road conditions aren’t at their best. Of course, there are inbuilt

traction and stability control systems in place, but such is the quality of the four-wheel fully independent suspension the car doesn’t rely on them. The 225/50 x 18in Dunlop Sport rubber works well to maintain grip, the tyres are also quiet and send solid information as to how they are reacting back to the steering wheel. And if you do venture off the seal, the Legacy gets hill descent control as part of a clever series of electronic programs which keep the car out of trouble in the first instance, most linked to Subaru’s Eyesight safety system. In entry-level form the Legacy is reasonably well appointed. I would have liked to see satellite navigation fitted, but it’s not. However, there are plenty of other specification items which work towards its price position. The Legacy is the quintessential mid-to-large five-seater sedan. It has high comfort levels developed through a spacious in-cabin environment. Subaru sales have been constantly buoyant throughout the years. In the South Island the brand has been served well thanks to the challenging environment in which we live. It’s a nice feeling to have that quality engineering underneath when the bad weather hits.

Quality vehicles and service under one roof Whether purchasing a used Subaru from CroweSport or getting your car looked after in their workshop, you can be assured you are dealing with a team who have not just extensive knowledge of the brand, but a full-on passion for Subarus.

A

ll their cars are hand-selected from Japan with only the highest quality examples being purchased. The vehicles all come fully inspected and serviced by their team of experts and range from those with low mileage and high specification through to more affordable options. There are always plenty on the forecourt to choose from, with new vehicles arriving on a regular basis. Owner Trevor Crowe says he believes in the brand because of its safety in all weather conditions. “Being all-wheel drive, it is equally safe on and off-road and drives much better in wet, slippery conditions than two-wheel drive vehicles.” Their nopressure sales team are just as enthusiastic and knowledgeable and are on hand to help you make the right choice for you. CroweSport are not only renowned for selling quality Subarus at great prices, but are a complete one-stop-shop also known

for providing terrific vehicle care, too. Their team of mechanics have extensive experience in servicing all makes and models as well as Subarus. They pride themselves on the high-quality work they do and on their customer service. They offer loan vehicles, if needed, and offer free cambelt, brake and cooling system checks. They use the same top-of-therange products on their customers’ cars as on their own race cars to give extra peace of mind. Their team of experts will carry out lube and service checks, make sure CV joints, brakes, clutches, shock absorbers and suspension systems are all safe. They can turn their knowledge and experience to anything from a wheel alignment to a full engine or transmission system overhaul, or from replacing a battery to a Warrant of Fitness or new tyres. Their passion for motorsport is, of course,

led by Trevor himself, and what they learn about their vehicles when they are out racing is brought back to the workshop and passed onto their customers. For great Subaru sales and service, find them at 518 Moorhouse Avenue, or visit www.crowesport.co.nz. Phone 03 379 7615 or email boss@crowesport.co.nz.
